Getting Out of Credit Card Debt

If you own a credit card, it won’t be a surprise that you owe the bank a large sum of money as payments dried up months ago. This is quite a normal worldwide phenomenon because we all tend to spend more than we earn. One report shows that most people owe at least $8,000 in credit card debt to buy things as well as to pay bills.

Because of this problem, I often get asked this question – How to get out of credit card debt? Well, getting out of credit card debt is easy but there are a few changes that you have to make in your life in order to do this.

Firstly, you must know how many credit cards you have as some people have more than one. Then add up all the debt from all your credit card/s and observe the APR or Annual Percentage Rate on each card.  This is important because if your APRs are high then you are spending most of your money on the interest. That is actually how credit card companies make money. Be warned that the interest can go as high as 18% or more, more reasons why you must study your financial statement with a hawk eye or bankruptcy could stare in your face before you know it.

To get out of credit card debt also means that you have to stop spending on luxurious things. You need to know the difference between your needs and wants. For example you need to pay for your bills, food and so on to survive. But you don’t need a new dress because you want to have the latest style. In other word, buy what you need, not what you want.

Other than that, you should pay attention on the amount that you spend. You can do this by writing down the amount for the whole month, including expenses on gas, bills, pet supplies and so on. To make things easier, use the program such as Quicken on your computer to do this. With this you can see how much you spend a month and don’t be surprised to see that you have more money than the month before because you reduce your spending.

Keep track of your spending and it will help you in managing your income and also getting out of credit card debt. Many people are poor in terms of discipline, so if you need help with credit card debt, enlist the assistance of your family member or friend who has a good head for numbers to ensure that you toe the line.
